The position of Birmingham as the foremost industrial town is reflected in the fact that both the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Metals were founded there. It was in 1907 that the senior metallurgists from London,Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow as well as Birmingham convened in Birmingham to found the Institute.

Although the Birmingham Metallurgical Society convened the meeting the Institute set up a structure of local branches and for some years there were two local groups with little difference between them and mainly holding joint meetings. Eventually it was agreed that the Birmingham Society would be the local representative of the Institute. The Institution of Metallurgists was later established to deal with professional, as distinct from scientific interests.

There was an Iron and Steel Institute many years earlier. Now only one national body exists and it also incorporates former Plastics and Mining interest. This both reflects the greater understanding of the commonalities of material behaviour and the decline of British industry.
